LineVision, Inc., which enables utilities to improve transmission line capacity, resiliency and safety through advanced sensors and analytics, today launched LineHealth - a new asset health evaluation tool for asset managers. LineHealth pairs LineVision’s non-contact transmission line sensors with physics-based digital twin technology to enable condition-based asset management. The model tracks how factors such as high-temperature cycling, wind-driven oscillations/galloping and excessive physical loading events such as icing contribute to aging and loss of tensile strength of the conductor, and for the first time provides a comparison of the built and actual sag history of the conductor. With this data, utility asset health managers are informed when their lines:

LineVision is excited to announce that we have signed a new channel partnership. Flexity, serving the electric utilities of Australia, will help us deploy our transmission line monitoring systems in this international market and is a strong addition to our growing global network of partners, which spans Europe, Asia, the Americas, and now Australia. Our expanding channel partner network demonstrates the common challenges driving demand for advanced transmission line monitoring technology on electric grids around the world.

LineVision is looking forward to being a part of the discussion at California’s first Wildfire Technology Innovation Summit in Sacramento, March 20-21. The subject couldn’t be timelier. Together with national and international thought leaders and practitioners from state and local governments, academia and industry participants will identify and collaborate on the range of technological solutions and strategies to reduce the devastating impact of wildfires in California.

Unlocking Capacity with Transmission Line Monitoring

In April 2018, California curtailed a record 94,805 MWh of renewable energy, which is enough energy to power approximately 30 million homes for an hour.¹ Similar challenges are being faced by grid operators around the world where the growth of renewable energy is outpacing the capacity on the grid, resulting in higher energy costs and wasted energy production. Without new tools to increase the flexibility and capacity of the grid, large amounts of renewable energy may never make its way to the grid because of transmission traffic jams limiting the flow of power.

Use what you have, but use it smarter

New transmission lines are certainly part of the solution. Renewable generation is frequently concentrated in regions far from load centers and more capacity is needed as new projects come online. But building new transmission infrastructure is costly, runs up against zoning challenges and can take decades to complete. And it doesn’t address the immediate problem of what to do with all of the renewable energy stuck in the grid equivalent of a Los Angeles rush hour.
